Election Guidelines & Regulations
The Residential Housing Association (RHA) partners with the Student Government Association (SGA) Election Commission to operate the election.
RHA Election Rules
The Residential Housing Association (RHA) at Texas A&M University follows a structured and transparent election process to promote fairness, representation, and leadership development. All candidates must comply with the following rules to maintain eligibility and uphold the integrity of the election.
On-Campus Senator Eligibility
- Eligibility for on-campus senators is determined by the SGA Election Commission. Please refer to their official website for the most current guidelines.
RHA President Eligibility
- Must have lived on campus prior to filing for candidacy
- Must have served on the Executive Board or participated in a Community Council during the previous session or semester
- Must be a current student at Texas A&M University – College Station and enrolled at least half-time
- Must reside on-campus during the term of presidency
- Must be available to fulfill summer responsibilities related to RHA and Residence Life
- Cannot be employed as a Residence Advisor (RA) or Academic Peer Mentor (APM)
- Must be in good academic and conduct standing with the university
- Must maintain a minimum GPR of 2.25
- Further eligibility for RHA President is determined by the SGA Election Commission. Please refer to their official website for the most current guidelines.

Bannering Guidelines
- Bannering is open to all candidates, regardless of position
- Bannering must and only occur in the designated areas at the Commons on the side of the sidewalk along Lubbock Street, in front of the flowerbeds
- Bannering in the main walkway to the Commons or the back is prohibited
- Bannering at other residence halls or Residence Life buildings are prohibited
- Bannering contents and rules are to be determined by the SGA Election Commision
Digital Flyer Content
Digital campaign fliers will compiled into a group. Paper fliers of a QR-code to this group will be distributed by RHA and Residence Life to all hall bulletins. To be included, digital campaign fliers:
- Must be created in Google Slides on one slide with no alterations to slide size or orientation
- Files must be named Campaigning Digital Bulletin Board – Name of candidate/group
- Shared to [email protected]
- Have their full name they are running as
- Have a form of contact information
- Have what position(s) they are running for
- Must be submitted by the date distributed during the Mandatory Candidates Meeting
Inner-Hall Campaigning
Campaigning within residence halls must follow all Residence Life guidelines and be approved in advance. Candidates are expected to respect community standards, quiet hours, and shared spaces.
DOOR-TO-DOOR CAMPAIGNING IS NOT ALLOWED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS INCLUDES KNOCKING ON DOORS OR POSTING UP UNAPPROVED FLIERS IN HALLS. ANY VIOLATORS MAY BE REPORTED BY STAFF AND POTENTIALLY CHARGED UNDER VIOLATION OF COMMUNAL AND PRIVACY REGULATIONS.
- If all residents in a room approve, a flier may be posted on their own door or window
- Candidates are responsible for any of their fliers that are in the halls
- Approved fliers may not on walls, entry doors, poster boards, or in commons spaces
- Always check with the Floor RA or the hall advisor for any further restrictions
Election FAQs
Who can run for an on-campus position during elections?
For RHA President, any current on-campus resident in good academic and conduct standing and was in a Community Council or the RHA Executive Board. Candidates for on-campus senator must follow the guidelines set by the Student Government Association Election Commission.

Can I campaign in residence halls?
Yes, but only with paper flyers in approved areas or digital flyers. You may not perform door-to-door solicitation.
What happens if there's no RHA President selected during an election?
If no RHA President is selected by the student body for any reason, the RHA Executive Board will take the procedure to the next RHA General Assembly to which on-campus residents and Community Council members will initiate a runoff election through a blind-vote. The majority of the blind-vote will officialy be the next RHA President.
